Imagine you're in a new place like a remote work meeting or traveling abroad. What do you do when you feel hungry? You probably go to nearest restaurant and order something you like from the menu. Most likely you’ll be happy with what you ordered.
For vegans this experience is less positive. Vegans can't be spontaneous in new places. They will often compromise and eat the most common vegan option in restaurants: side dishes like salad and fries, or spend a lot of time searching online for a place with better options.
The common ways today to find places to eat is by asking for recommendations or searching online. Most food search apps & websites search and review restaurants and choosing a place based on it's menu takes a lot of time:
Not all restaurants has vegan options
The ones that do have not always distinguishing vegan dishes from others on the menu
The vegan options on a menu can end up being side dishes
I looked at the most common food search and delivery apps today in Israel. All the apps search and review restaurants. Most of them show the full menu inside the app and only some distinguish between vegan dishes from others.
I sent a questionnaire to number of vegans asking them about the experience of searching what to eat when they’re alone and also with non-vegan companion. This is what they said:
In this generation, where everything is instant, people don’t have the time to waste on searching stuff. Specially when they’re hungry. This effects businesses too:
People will ditch the search and go to places they already know
They Won't get to find new places with good vegan dishes
Businesses that has vegan dishes are not exposed to vegan audience
I chose to implement that by:
Exposing the vegan menu immediately on the app’s main screen
Search and filter based on dish name/type
Write/read reviews on dishes
The goal is to lead the users to choose the perfect dish for them, location wise and dish type wise, as fast as possible:
Exposing the vegan menu immediately on the app’s main screen
Placing the filter action on the FAB
Make the navigation action accessible from every page
The design highlights the features that will effects the user decision.
Dishes images on a light background
Highlighted navigation between list view and map view
Strong and bold CTA (filter and navigate/call actions)
It’s easy to find s specific dish type/restaurants. Just type the keyword in the search bar or filter by dish type.
Find out all you need to know about a vegan option before you choose a restaurant, and if you like it, start navigating.
With this feature vegans can now choose the restaurant for the next get-together.
